Julie Metaxotos IWD2021

Kilmore District Health Consumer Representative

What is your greatest achievement/highlight/story, something that you are proud of?

I was involved in a serious car crash Xmas eve 2013. My life was hanging in the balance and I was airlifted to the Alfred hospital for urgent surgery and treatment. I was put into an induced coma for 10 days and after extensive surgeries woke up. I wasn’t able to walk or feed or care for myself independently. I spent 9 long months in hospital .. I’m proud because amidst the trauma I was able to recover and I am now walking, independent and working again it’s truly my greatest achievement.

Have you overcome challenges that you have learnt from?

Definitely my car crash. My life was turned upside down and I needed to rebuild my life with a new kind of normal. I learned that it’s how you choose to face adversity or any challenge in life that determines the outcome. Perseverance and a positive mindset have been key drivers during this time.

Who are the women who have inspired you in your life and/or career, and why?

My mum. Purely because she was always so strong in her ways, very disciplined and fair with us 3 kids growing up. She was always positive and showed a quiet strength which I always admired and still do. She’s the rock of our family she never lets any setbacks get in her way. Amazing and graceful. Full of love. She’s selfless. Her motto was to always keep going no matter what. If you fall you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and smile :)

What advice would you give to future women and girls in your industry?

Just be you. You will shine because you are unique no one else is like you. Be proud and be brave. Stand tall. Follow your gut.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you want to meet, and why?

I always admired Audrey Hepburn, her style and grace I’m in awe of her! Also, her compassion and the charity work she is known for, amazing lady.

Who is someone you look up to at KDH and why?

I love Jitka she’s such a dedicated lady and works tirelessly, she’s so naturally warm and giving. I’m so happy that our paths have crossed. She’s a beautiful soul.

What is a quote or saying that you live by?

Whatever is good for the soul, do that.

** This photo is of Julie three years post accident. Julie was able to travel independently to Sydney without the assistance of aids she was able to stand on her own and present at a corporate event. This photo represents a huge achievement.
